PTFE, PFA and FEP: Differences Between Fluoropolymer Coating Types

The fluoropolymer family gathered under the general “Teflon” umbrella includes several distinct materials, each with its own properties. Choosing the right fluoropolymer is critical to how well a coating performs in a given application.

PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene)

The most widely used fluoropolymer. Known for high temperature resistance and a very low coefficient of friction, PTFE is typically applied by spraying and is generally rated for continuous use up to about 260°C.

PFA (Perfluoroalkoxy)

PFA shares properties similar to PTFE, but because it is melt-processable, it can be applied to more complex geometries and in thinner, more uniform layers. Its continuous-use temperature rating is also around 260°C, comparable to PTFE.

FEP (Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene)

FEP has a somewhat lower temperature rating — typically around 200-205°C for continuous service — but stands out for its transparency and flexibility, making it a common choice for specialty cable and film applications.
